Hi friends,

I am a new soon-to-be mama of 2 silkie chicks AND 2 silked Serama chicks.I keep reading that seramas are terrific flyers and silkies can’t fly...soooo do silked Seramas fly? Or not? Will they all sleep on the floor? Trying to understand how high/tall the coop needs to be and how much perch length (if any!). Thanks in advance for any help!

They should have a perch. A 2x4 with rounded edges works really well. Just a guess, but probably only a foot or so high. If they're silkied anything they can't fly, even though seramas can. They probably will want to perch, so make sure it's low enough they can easily jump to and from. It's bad for chickens to sleep on the ground. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
Also, silkied seramas are super adorable!!! Enjoy them.

Thank you so, so much for the quick reply and for the serama encouragement :) im a tad terrified but mostly excited. One more coop question: For two Seramas and two silkies, is 12 sq. ft a large enough coop if they’ll only be in there for sleeping? Eep! Thank you again..

It should be. Do you have a predator-proofed run they'll be in during the day? It's easy for predators to pick off small bantams, even during the day. Are you getting adults or chicks?

Chicks! Because both breeds are so small, I’m thinking of cooping them indoors to avoid having to worry about nighttime predators, and letting them out into an enclosed run during the day. I live in an urban area and am guessing daytime predators are most likely neighborhood cats and hawks.
