Hello all! I hope I'm posting in the right category here.
My question is this: do silkie chickens need other silkies?
The full story- I've had bantam chickens for years, love them to death, but I've somehow never ended up with a silkie. Recently in a freak accident a dog got into my yard and killed all but one of my hens. It was absolutely traumatizing for both myself and for the lone survivor. After taking extensive additional security measures around my yard, I picked up some friends for my lonely girl. 2 hens from one person and a silkie hen from another person. They are integrating nicely and no one is being mean to anyone.. but the silkie is all alone. She is eating and drinking fine, I trimmed her hair back so she can see, but she just stands by herself in the corner of the coop all day unless I'm in there and then she hangs out with me. She sleeps on the ground and doesn't roost with the others even though there is a ramp in place so she can get up. She just seems a little...slow? The woman I got her from said she just didn't integrate with her big chickens and got picked on too much because she was so little and docile.
Would she be happier with another silkie? Do silkies just need other silkies? I was thinking about getting her a silkie chick or two to raise and then maybe she would feel like she had more purpose in life? She just isn't connecting with the other 3 and I feel bad for her!
Any advice from seasoned silkie owners? Thank you!
