Do they stud out roosters??

I am BRAND new to chicken’ing.
I have fallen deep like everyone does.
I do not have a rooster because I live in a HOA and county regulations.
I know I could hire a canine stud if I want to breed a pup.
What about chickens?
Feel absolutely free to make fun of my naivety? It will be appreciated

Are you wanting fertile eggs? You can buy fertile eggs for hatching, of the breeds you want. Are you wanting to get YOUR hens' eggs fertilized? Putting a "stud" rooster in with them for a brief period probably would not work. It ttakes time for a flock of hens to accept a new chicken, time your HOA probably would not allow. Say 30 days quarantine plus at least two weeks for integration.

For reference, we just put a new rooster with our girls around the same time we got some eggs shipped to us. Because of the timing we only had eggs from their first week together before we started to incubate. We have six hens. We put the rooster in on a Saturday, the first first fertile eggs didn't show up until Tuesday (two hens). A third hen by Thursday, and a 4th from an early Saturday egg (I dated when they were collected and know who lays which eggs). I'm using which eggs developed as proof of "fertility" as we are currently on day 12 incubating. (18 of our own eggs set, and 10 were clear). In that time two girls he hadn't gotten.

There is also artificial insemination which is easy for even a backyard breeder:

I have read for turkeys, the semen stays viable for 30 min, so conceivably, you could have a rooster's owner come out with the rooster, get a syringe of semen, and then hand it to you for you to immediately inseminate your hens without the rooster coming into contact with your hens.


You would want to see what, if anything, can be passed disease-wise from semen for chickens.

Remember, if you hatch fertile eggs, roughly half of them will be cockerels, which you said you can't have. That 50% is an average; if you hatch 8 eggs, you could get any number of boys/girls.

If you want to do this, figure out what you will do with cockerels before you hatch. They can be VERY difficult to rehome, even giving them away.

Not trying to dissuade you, just letting you know what might happen. If you want more chicks, it is much easier to buy sexed pullets.

Seriously there is nothing more fun than broody hen and chicks. But some of us like raising our own chicken meat. Some of us have a ragtag bunch, and some bred to the SOP’s. There are many aspects to this hobby. It will be fun for years to come.
