So we decided that we wanted to spend LOTS of time with our chickens because it was important to us that they are friendly and not afraid of our children. And vice versa, so our children don’t have to be afraid of them.
Tonight, for the first time, they decided they needed OUR attention. We went out to put them to bed and they just all started wanting us to hold them. At one point, myself, my husband, and our daughter had all but 3 of them.
It was so fun! Even my avoidant little cockerel wanted some snuggles, I couldn’t believe it!!!

Im hoping this is a good thing and not some clingy abnormal chicken behavior we will regret in the future. Because we have vested a ton of time into them the last 6 weeks and seeing them wanting our attention was so awesome!!!

I’m also hoping this means we are making progress with our little cockerel!! I do want to keep him and have him be a member of our flock. But we can’t have aggression towards our kids at all.

(Please ignore my appearance. I worked from home today and was make up free!!!)

There is nothing you have to fear your a nice looking gal... Great looking family too
Now none of us are models I think :he :)
There cuddly may change as they get close to laying... He, your cockerel may change then too.

Fun pics! :jumpy:cool:

The girls will be fine. The only monster behavior you’ve “created” is the fact that they will potentially demand your attention! Once they begin to lay, their behaviors will change. Usually, they get more mellow and laid back...so they will likely be even more friendly. Keep in mind that pecking order becomes even more obvious around that time and a sweet chick may be the queen bee to all the others and defend her position/ teach others a few things, but she’ll still be sweet to you ... and rightly (based on pecking order) deserve first treats from you bc she’s the queen bee.

the male: various views here. He will become a jerk or not. Somemales are just going to be aggressive, but not others. you have chicks all the same age, and no older males or females to keep him in line while he goes through major teen hormone surges. He may still be ok to you and the females, but he may be a teen jerk and you should be ready and willing to pen him separately for a few months if this occurs. We had new chicks ( our first batch) with some males. We kept 2, and both were a bit like jerks -they were aggressive to us even though we handled them a lot. Now we have a multi-age flock and the younger males are much better behaved overall, bc they have experienced hens and an older rooster keeping them in check. Our current head rooster is a gentleman to us...he stays out of our way. We had a younger male (sadly recently died) that had to be penned separately bc he was aggressive in the flock and overmating the females ...and he wasn’t head rooster either. He was not aggressive with us, so that was a good thing. He was only9.5 months old when he died so he was definitely in the huge teen hormone surge phase.

Ummm...chickens jumping on you uninvited is not a good thing, IMO.
It's good they are not afraid of you, but there's a limit.
So endearing with chicks, it can get rather annoying and even dangerous as they get bigger.
Best to gently break this bad habit.
(Yeah, Yeah, I know, such a DebbieDowner)
