Do you know how many times I have had to explain this since I got chickens last month??? I have lost count.

I peddle eggs and am not surprised by what regular people think. What I find awkward is explaining to women that chickens don't poop eggs from their butts, but where they actually come from, without using locker room terms.

I would be curious to know if this applies to other birds (say geese or turkeys). It does seem that most birds don't lay eggs without pairing off first?

I think females of most animal species go through an egg cycle regardless if a male is present but I wouldn't swear to it.
