Do you really need to put a fake egg in the nest box?

I remember growing up we used to put a fake egg in the nesting box to get them to lay. Is this really nessecary? Or will they lay on there own?

All the fake egg does is show them where to lay, or that you want them to lay the eggs in that box...It will not "MAKE" them lay...only mother nature can do that...lol

Might be a good idea for them to get to understand that is what the nesting boxes are for. I put in the nesting boxes this past Monday and added 2 golf balls per nest. The next morning one of the chickens was nesting in the box. They pick up the idea quickly. Now, if they would only start to lay...

Fake eggs are also good when these guys show up>

Yeeeoooow! What a large snake. Looks like he found what he was after. Would have been nice if the yellow extension cord would have scared him off. The cord was the first thing I saw and said, "what a long snake!" Need that extra cup of coffe to get the brain into high gear.
