Our garden is starting to wind down and I got to thinking, there won't be any leftovers during the fall and winter for the chickens. What do you or do you, add anything to their regular feed diet? Now they're getting fruits, veggies, weeds, grass, etc.

Left overs from the fridge that are week old and any culling of veggies and what not when preparing the meals etc.

I use sunflower seeds as a morning treat when well below 0F. It's high in fat which is quick energy to be used to aid in keeping warm. Treat it just like a treat and only toss a handful or two on the ground. For say 10 chickens a 50lb bag is only 1/2 to 2/3 used and rest I plant a hedge row of come spring.

Grit supplement as the ground here is frozen solid for almost 4 months, excepting a January thaw if we're lucky for a week. I gather a small pail of course sand/ small pebbles from the driveway late fall. Toss a handful in the run about every two weeks.

I agree with the left overs, mine love soups, noodles, any thing the dog can't eat. I also give them slabs of mixed hay to pick through, they get so excited.
