We have 13 chickens - all will be 7 weeks old on Monday, May 10. This is our first chicken experience, but even to novices, it's pretty obvious that we have a few roosters in the hen house. We really want to end up with 8 or 9 hens - we got extras figuring that we'd either lose some, or some would turn out to be boys. We didn't lose any, but the red combs are starting to come on strong. The older they get, the more we're wondering if we're actually going to end up with 8 or 9 girls.
Also, we got our first 7 chicks from a local farm store - one of them was supposed to be a barred rock. We later got 3 cuckoo marans from a breeder. When we put them together, the original BR was so much bigger than the other 3, it was easy to tell them apart. All of a sudden the marans seemed to catch up in size, and I lost track of who is who. They look so similar. Is there any well of telling them apart at this age, or will we have to wait until they are full grown. One of the barred birds is an obvious male - we just don't know what breed he is. Thanks for your input! Enjoy your day!
