@Kuntry Klucker the coop you are now currently looking at has an "open" vent area above the pop door. It could allow snakes in. Lol
I never thought of it until I was re-reading some reviews and the person mentioned the area and they were going to stuff insulation in. I wanted to tell them it was for ventilation, but on tsc you can't respond. Then, I started thinking about what ifs... and realized, I should have put hw cloth there.
That thread with the mods that I directed you to last night has a pic with her pullets sitting up there.
I don't know one snake from another probably because I don't hang around long enough to identify them. But I know we have rattlesnakes and copperheads.I don't like snakes either, but I have gotten used to them. As long as its not a venamous one its no big deal. For the most part I just get black snakes and king snakes. If its a king snake I will let it stay in the backyard because they eat the venomous snakes. It does not hurt my chickens just takes the eggs, which is not a huge deal especially if it is keeping other things under control. My husband and sons hate snakes, so if there is a snake in the coop I am the one who gets it out. Funny how that worked out. But then again I have always been a bit strange and find snakes to be absolutely amazing creatures.
The hawks here are usually worse in the winter months. During the spring, summer, and early fall their food source is plentiful. But after the cold sets in their food source becomes scarce so I have to be a bit more watchful of their presence. But for the most part, if the weather is cold, or wet the girls would rather stay in their pens where it is warm and cozy. So really they pretty much lock them selves up most of the winter. But still I keep a close eye out for hawks.
