Hello my friends,
I am so thankful to have you.
Does anyone know what this is? This is Redneck Sweetheart. She is one month and one week old. She basically hatched and lost the feathers around her neck-She WAS molting very bad.. it looked like a burn. I treated it like that, bc her flesh was on fire and even in the end, she wound up peeling. Anyway- this bump- ? She is soo TINY! She is the tiniest of the bunch. And I don’t mean to be “weird” or offensive in any way whatsoever- but she kind of (def) has squintier eyes than all of the other chicks in her hatch. She looks like a vulture. She is extremely extremely passive. She is the sweetest thing. I knew she had a few things going on, but why’s is this ...? I know we aren’t doctors, but if anyone has seen it on their chickens before- that would be helpful... it’s not like I can excise her wart or cyst... I mean, I actually could, bc I have a plant scalpel in the kitchen on my window sill, but this is a true little baby baby sweetheart. Just her Something genetically is def wrong with her. I was in the medical field, I just have a hard time seeing boundaries sometimes, if that’s what I could call it..

chicks shouldn't molt... did you ever figure out the problem? was she picked on by the others? could she have burned them off on a heat lamp?

Baby chicks actually go through a few "mini-molts" as they grow, it's how the downy feathers get replaced with real feathers, then bigger feathers replace the smaller feathers, thru about 4 months of age. The lump could just be a bump, could be an impacted feather follicle. But something is def going on with her skin; hard to say if it's Fowl Pox like has been suggested, bc it can look so different in chicks versus adult birds. How is she eating/drinking/pooping? What breed was she supposed to be? Take care, others will be along with better ideas!
