He just recently started this. He will start honking. He scared me the first time he did it. I thought it was a bird called a chachalaca. Im afraid hes under stress.

Is he a young cockerel finding his voice??? Just like teens, their voices will change. Do you have a video???
I will have to get it on video for you. Hes about 2 and a half maybe 3.
When hes was doing it today it was for much less time. Only a minute and i asked him what was wrong. He stopped shortly after that.

A video would be great! Upload it to youtube or similar platform then provide us a link.

Hes the one in my pic for the avatar. He crows just fine. Its just that honking noise. My neighbors two chickens(boy n girl) decided to "invade" my yard where i keep my chicks. I also thought maybe he was upset another rooster was in our turf. Im not sure. Ive owned dogs n cats; rabbits; turtles; snakes and even a cockatoo but these chickens im so green im almost ashamed lol. Thats why i looked for a forum where i could learn from others experience. I truly love these birds so much.

My chickens of either sex will make a honking noise when they eat too fast. It's pretty much like a chicken coughing. It never lasts more than a couple of minutes though. Is he really attacking his feed?

He didnt do it today so no video clip ill try to update when i get it recorded. Also not entirely sure if hes doing it after eating.

I would observe him for several days and try to determine if eating/drinking coincides with the honking.

Also check his crop first thing in the morning before he eats/drinks to make sure it has emptied overnight. He may be having some crop issues, but the only way to know is to check him for a few days.
