I was told that fruit will cause hen's to stop laying eggs for 4 to 6 weeks, is this true? And if so is it all fruit? We did go through a spell last summer/fall where our girls stopped laying eggs and we just got our 1st egg again yesterday.

Egg layer should be their main source of food. Fruit as a treat is ok. I had not heard this before. I give mine fruit.

I get lots of fruit and veg scraps from the dining room at work, no problems with laying except for when the were molting.

We feed fruit along with other scraps and gleanings all the time. And every batch of mash I make has bananas in it during prime banana season (we grow bananas). Whoever told you that was ... um... wrong. It sounds like your flock was just molting?

As long as they are eating enough protein, fruit consumption has nothing to do with it.
