I have a question i just put new nesting boxes in my coup and i was wondering is it true that if you place an egg in there will they really start laying in there because they see the egg? and also is hay in the bottom of the boxes okay??

Orpington...yes...the fake egg works. I had to do mine that way...works like a charm!
I use hay in my nest boxes...they seem to prefer it over the pine shaveings.

You can use golf balls or white or brown stones if you don't have wooden eggs.

I just put a rock, roughly the size and shape of an egg, in each box. They jumped up there, checked them out, rolled them around and then hunkered down on them. And yes, they are now laying in those boxes.
