I saw on a silkie owner's Instagram story that during snow she kept her flock of silkies in a shed to make sure they don't get wet because a wet and cold silkie =sick silkie. I only have 1 silkie in my flock of standard birds so during our winter should I bring her in at times? Our basement is very warm and we have a crate for her so managing that will be fine I was just wondering what other silkie owners do.

My silkies were some of the most cold hardy birds I had. What I do for my feather legged birds (and all of the rest) is I put shavings or straw/hay down so they can go outside and walk around w/o getting soaked. Or I just put food/water in their coop and they stay there all day.

They are chickens, barnyard animals with down in their feathers to help keep them warm. As long as they have a place to escape the elements and warm up, they will be fine. If you pamper them, it’ll just make your life harder. But as long as they have a coop with proper ventilation, they will be perfectly fine.

In the summer it’s not a big deal if they get a little rained on, though mine usually head for the coop if it more than a light sprinkle. In the winter it’s a different story silkies feathers don’t repel water and the get soaked to the skin fast and take forever to dry. In the winter that can be a death sentence, they do very well in the cold even extreme cold as long as they stay dry. Mine stay in the coop or covered run in the winter.

I wish my silkie would do that. In the middle of pouring rain, shell jumps out of the coop so I have to chase her around to get her back in. And no not in the run like when I open my door to go in the coop she takes this chance and jumps and runs to the grass. But usually, it's when she drinks from the nipples because her head feathers move the nipple so hesitates shooting water out all over her and she doesn't care. Shes been staying dry for a while now since I posted this so thank god
