We have 4 RIRs but we live in Connecticut.
Large Dog House - $100
Used large dog house for sale. Purchased it at Kloter Farms for $450.00
I don't have any pictures of it right now. The house is apx 4' square and about 3' high. It has a roof that is hinged and can be lifted up for cleaning, a wind wall in the interior, cedar exterior siding and asphalt shingles. The opening is square.

If you are set on a small coop, it is probably a good buy.

Personally, I would not go by the 4 sq ft per bird in your climate. There could be days or weeks that they will want to stay indoors because of snow and cold weather. To prevent their feeling crowded at those times you will need much more square footage than that.

But then, I do not want a coop I can't walk into. And mine go out every day of the year.

$100 seems kind of pricey for a dog house even if it is from Kloter Farms. You will need to work on it to make it into a coop and being a fellow CT resident I would recommend that you go with something that is a bit bigger and able to be insulated.

I don't have any good pics right now. I haven't made any mods yet but I do want to re-do the door so that it can lock. I may make a hardware cloth door to give them more air flow at night. I have a cat carrier butted up against it at night to keep the door "locked". I prop the door open during the day because the meaties like to go and hang out in the coolness of it in the hot summer.

If you like it that is what matters, sometimes the cost is worth it, especially if you have a busy life that doesn't allow the time to do things differently. We have busy times and sometimes it is the easy way out to buy something that is finished and ready to go.

I have to agree.
It depends on what you WANT, and have time for.
The $ is always depending on you. And what your budget allows!
It sounds good to me.

You need to figure out just how much work you will save buying this. I REALLY like the set-up that Heavy D has.

One REAL advantage is that this is built out of wood. Wood breathes, just like cotton and wool clothing. Aluminum and plastic hold humidity, just like synthetics.

I would buy it if I figured that the price was equal or less than the cost of materials. After you adapt it with good ventilation, you'll want to paint or stain it, or else it will weather.
