I have an over red hen, that always manages to get her saddle off. Because of this, she has developed a large sunburn all across her back. I have found that if you put coconut oil on the burn daily, then it will go away. Not to mention it softens the skin, making it easier for the quill to come through. I hopes this helps somebody.

My hens develop swollen, red backs when roosters breed with them too many times. I don't think its sunburn, though the oil probably helps, so you can continue that!

I have chickens much worse than this, but here is a picture of a hen missing feathers on her back and wings. Some of them have completely bald backs.

Best of luck!

Yes she does have the red spots from breeding but she is also sunburn we removed her from the roo yesterday. Get skin is hard and inflamed poor girl

Buying or making one of those special saddles for your hen could help solve the sunburn and rooster problems at the same time.
