The 9 week olds keep sneaking out of their pen and the dog thinks they are the funnest squeeky toys ever. The dog does not bother the big chickens except to steal their food, but these bite sized morsels are too exciting for him to restrain himself. Two days ago he got to 2 of them.

One of the birds puffed up with air under its skin and the other I feel sure has a broken wing. Both are eating and drinking in the "infirmary" and the air-under-the-skin one seems to be recovering fairly well. But on the other one, his one wing just flops loose.

Should I rig a sling? Amputate? Cull?

Hard to say. Duct tape works well as an apron; I'd be tempted to tape it in place, giving her something like a cast, something to hold the bones still. They have air in their bones so this may not work very well, but I'd probably try it. If you have to go all the way around the body, remember to allow for growth.

I'm just "winging it" here (pardon the pun) from reading; never had to deal with a broken wing. Best of luck to you.

Keep working with those dogs' bet you'll wind up with dogs who keep predators away!

I have returned the one to the big pen. The broken wing one is eating and drinking but hollers every time I try to look at his wing. It just hangs there.

I am so torn about what to do. He is part of a group of 75 EE cockerels that I am raising for meat. (Capons actually.) He has not been caponized yet and I am somewhat loathe to put him through the surgery when he is already injured.

I am thinking I may leave him intact and put him in with DD's sultans. They are quite docile and he's have the best chance at not getting picked on until he's old enough for processing. (I am planning to process the 'slips' at crowing age.) The other option is to just cull him now.

Anyone else have experience with broken wings?
