I am pet setting my friend's ducks this week. One of the neighbor's dogs (he's very small) got loose and grabbed one of the ducks by the neck and whipped her around. We got the dog to release the duck and she sprinted away. I couldn't catch her after all the ruckus, but I couldn't see any blood or noticeable puncture wounds. There was bunch of feathers on the ground though.
I've been watching the duck tonight and she has extended and flapped her wings, she has quacked, and she looks like she is breathing normally, although a little hard (worried that maybe her esophagus is bruised or something? Is this possible/would it be noticeable?). I've also seen her bend her neck and sit down.
I'm just wondering if there's anything I should be looking out for/anything I should do to ensure that the duck is okay? She seems fine to me, but I don't know that much about ducks.
Thank you SO MUCH for any and all advice.

Also, for possible puncture wounds, would those be obvious or could they potentially be unseen underneath all the feathers? Sorry if that's a stupid question... I don't want to try to catch her while she's resting from this event, but if you think I should check her more thoroughly, are there any tips to doing that gently?

Keep an eye out for any signs of blood or patches of missing feathers. Unless you can catch her and look through the feathers you probably won’t notice any small puncture wounds. I’d watch it’s behaviour for now as trying to catch would cause stress. There could be bruising, strain on the neck and open wounds.

Ducks are very tough! We had one attacked by a fox, with a really bad neck injury, but it recovered quickly.

If the duck seems unwell or you notice an injury, then it would be best to herd it into a pen and try to catch it. Just gently sift through the feathers with your fingers & blow on them to see the skin. If it’s scratched, torn or there’s puncture wounds use warm water and cotton to clean, and put a diluted soloution of betadine on the wound. This worked for our duck who was injured.

They really are tough little creatures. She may be sore for a few days but should be fine. I had one take a bobcat bite to the neck. It took about 10 days to heal completely. Sprayed the open part with Veteracyn, sorry can't spell, and she is a happy little egg layer today.
