My chickens were attacked this morning by 2 of the neighborhood dogs. Only one was killed, but the others are pretty traumatized/stressed out. What should I get to put in their feed and water to help with the stress and traumatization?

I'm pretty sure we are going to end up in court with this(this isn't a one time dog problem).

I use electrolyte powder I get from the agricultural store, but sugar-water, honey-water, molasses-water, Pedialyte or Gatorade all work.

The animal control officer just left. I cannot believe that until the dogs come back AGAIN he cannot do anything more than haul them back to the idiots and warn them.

He took me along with him to talk to the owners. He let me talk, the first thing I did was hold the chicken up so the owner could see the pullet in all of her dead glory . . . . I said, "This is what happened when you dogs came to my house today." Her kids saw the pullet. Then she said her kids didn't need all of this drama. I told her, "This is not drama ! This is reality !"

Of course, she had an excuse for the dogs escaping their pen, again ! This time it was the kids' fault !

The officer told her the dogs STAY IN THE HOUSE until the husband comes home and fixes the fence. Then he told her to put a lock on the gate to her dog run so the kids can't turn them loose any more.

She gave me $20 for the pullet. She said it was $15 for the chicken and $5 for the aggravation

Now I am going out and put some electrolytes in the water of the pullets that were in the pen with her. And hope for the best.....

And please don't advise me to shoot any dogs. It is not the dog's fault and I don't feel like having to dig a hole to bury a large Laborador anyway

I love that you showed them the chicken. When I was in high school our neighbor's dog got one of our chickens, to the point that it was still alive but needed to be put down. Mom took the chicken next door, got the whole family outside, showed them the suffering chicken and said, "This is what happens when you let your dogs run loose. Will one of you volunteer to put it out of its misery?" None of them volunteered, so she wrung its neck in front of them. I have never in my life encountered a more potent cure-all for wandering pet dogs, for you can bet word of that got around town.

Best of luck to the rest of your chickens, and I hope if her children did let the dog out, they're at least traumatized enough by your display of reality to know better in the future. No good ever comes of shielding people from such things, I think.

I doubt if the kids let the dogs out. Stacey is just full of excuses. She now knows that I mean what I say. The officer let me tell her just what I thought of her and her excuses. And she got an earfull ! Yes, it shocked the kids, and I am sorry that I had to do that, but, if they 'did' let the dogs out, maybe they will think twice from now on.

She even tried to tell the officer that the 'little' dog only gets loose when the 'big' dog gets loose. I told him that is not true, just last week, I went to Stacey's house and got her to come up and get the 'little' dog and take him back home. The 'big' dog was not with him then !

I am so upset even I can't believe it . . . .
