Hello - Yesterday, my lab got into my chicken coop and attacked a guinea hen. I believe he bit a chunk out of her back and ate it in the driveway; as that's where I saw the feathers and the guinea was still in the coop. I have her separated from the other poultry. She is walking, eating and drinking, however; when she spreads her wings, I can see the damage the dog has done and I cannot believe she is still living. It actually looks like meat is missing. I'm not sure how much pain she's in. She actually laid an egg last night. I don't know if the wound should be dressed - it does get covered by her feathers. Any ideas to help her heal and get through this? I am devastated. Thank you.

You need to clean this wound, several times a day. Apply antibiotic ointment to wound(nothing ending in "caine"toxic to chickens. Watch for infection. Dog wounds can be nasty, they are puncture wounds and filled with bacteria. Separate her from other chickens(so they do not peck at her wounds)bring her inside, until wounds are healed. Make sure you check for maggots,i fact check her now. If you find any, remove them. You might have to cover wounds if flies are going to be a problem. Most important, secure coop so that dog cannot do this again. If you feel she is in pain, you can give her a baby aspirin(80mg) dosage is 25mg per lb of body weight. Crush aspirin put in water or sprinkle over food. Eating and drinking are really good signs, but infection will be the problem.
