Yesterday, our dog gnawed our 17 week old pullets left thigh. There are no visible breaks, but it is very tender to touch, and her thigh and leg were covered in dog spittle. She can barely weight bear on it, and perfers to lie down. She is eating and drinking if it is brought to her. She is my favorite of the flock, the most petite and sweetest. What can I do to save her?

You should post this in the Emergencies & Illnesses section.
You'll get alot more help and advise.

Clean out her thigh with a diluted solution of betadine. Keep her quiet and give her a chance to heal. Chickens are pretty tough. I hope your pullet gets better soon.

I have a little adventurous Red Star pullet, Fannie, that sometimes flies over her fence. She recently was mauled by my Jack Russell Terrier and she has gotten well. I was amazed at her recovery.

Since then I've put in a double run fence. The girls have a secure 6'high chain link coop and run area and then are allowed free access to my backyard, which is enclosed by a four foot high picket and then the 3' high barrier fence. I've doubled the barrier fence and now Fannie doesn't fly over into it into the jaws of death.

Thank you to both replies. I am glad to know that chickens are fairly sturdy. This is my first experience with them. I will post to Emergencies, and I will also put in fenced area.
