I guess I have earned myself a reputation as chicken doctor around here..... I was at a friends house and she said "Lea, a few days ago my neighbors dog bit one of my chickens, she has been roosting at night but has just been sitting by that bush for a couple days. Will you take a look at her?"
Turns out she did have a pretty big wound, from thigh to close to vent, an area smaller than a deck of cards was chewed up, small part had fresh blood and the rest had dried. Because my friend works and has a toddler I took the chicken home to doctor.
I cleaned and soaked the wound with a strong iodine/ warm water solution. Trimmed away surrounding feathers and tried to hydrate and remove the feathers from inside the wound and then covered everything with a thick coat of neosporin. It had been 3 days since the attack, no signs of infection and looked like the skin was starting to granulate.
"Honey Bun" is now resting in a clean box and ate some scrambled eggs.
My idea is to just keep her clean and quiet and apply more antibiotic ointment. Is there anything else I should do?
Thanks!!
