dog eating chicken food

Hey guys, I'm new to this, but this website popped up when I was searching about my puppy eating chicken scratch... He is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi that is 9 1/2 weeks old. He was getting into the chicken scratch and now he won't stop hacking as if he needs to vomit but can't.. I'm nervous that the chicken scratch did something to his digestive system which is causing him to hack so much. Please help if you have any information at all about puppies hacking after eating chicken feed... I know, weird topic.

I also have a border collie that thinks she need to "clean up" after the chickens. I just have to watch her close and as soon as she starts she is corrected. That said it works when she knows we are watching but when we're not she's at it again.

My Doberman was doing the same thing, but luckily, she doesn't have any food issues (other than being greedy). She's SNEAKY too. I was going through a ton of chicken feed and thought I had a serious mouse or rat infestation. I set traps for weeks and came up with nothing. Then I noticed Daisy Mae's weight gain. After keeping a close eye on her, I caught her sneaking into the coop often. So, I closed to gate on her. My chickens free range as well, and I wanted to continue that. I cut a chicken sized hole in the gate and fashioned a hardware clothe door for times when I didn't want them out. Now the chickens can free range and Daisy can't access their feed (and I'm saving money by not constantly going to the store for the chickens).
Good luck :)

I think just mixing in cayenne flakes to the feed would prevent most of this. It also keeps out rodents- they don't like spicy either!

I'll have to try that.....Our Cavalier King Charles, Yorkie and Long Haired Chihuahua all love to eat the chickens feed. We just switched brands so I'm interested if that will take care of it or if I need to try the Cayane. We also built a Treadle Feeder similar to a Grandpa's Feeder you can buy online. The chicken steps on the treadle which lifts the lid. Chicken eats all it wants and when done, steps off and cover comes down over the food.....we just put it in the coop so are in the early stage of training them how to use it. I'll take some pix of it tomorrow.

Omg I am so happy I found this tread and I am not alone! My border collie Aussie mix will gordge himself on anything he can get and lately he figured out how to get into coop, to eat chicken food. Which now showed my Aussie puppy to do same thing. The chicken food gives them horrible diarrhea. And now I do not think I can free range my chickens bc of the dogs getting into the coop. Looked into electric collars for dogs and super expensive.

I want to add as a note that chickens don't taste the pepper, no receptors on thier tounge for it, so the dog may hate it, but they don't notice it.

I also agree with a feeding station that the dog can't get to, but the hens can.
I used cayenne pepper in the waste basket to keep the dogs out of the bathroom garbage. Worked fine until they developed a taste for cayenne pepper.

We are having this issue too with the dog going in and ransacking the chicken run. She can't get into the food because the chickens have to stick their head inside pvc elbows sticking out of a five gallon bucket. But the dog has started digging huge holes in the chicken run' floor. I don't see a reason bc there is nothing under the floor. It's just dirt. We are going to make a chicken only door during the day while the chickens are free ranging. The six inch squares of the wire cloth that we have in our garden will let the chickens through but not the dogs.
