in VA you can protect your property from marauding dogs or other predators. as long as they arent endangered and protected. i.e. birds of prey.

you did right confronting the neighbor. it helps keep the peace. but now consider them warned. and next time kill with extreme prejudice.

I want to add the caveot that in many places it is illegal to shoot within a certain distance of homes or occupied buildings (or toward them), and in most cities/towns, it is illegal to discharge a firearm at all. For those reading this thread, check your local laws; generally it is legal to dispose of an animal threatening or attacking your animals, but the allowed methods and species which are and are not protected (talking state law here, not federal law) vary from one state & city to another.
