Our coop gate was left open, and I think my dog scared two of my girls to death. When we found them, they were whole and no feathers around the yard. My aunt said that chickens can die from being scared. My question is, the four remaining girls are still very scared. They are hiding in their coop and won't come out in the open. How long before they are back to normal? Thank you!

It really depends on your chickens (all flocks react differently to stress and predators) plus what you do to encourage them and help them feel secure. It could be just a few days, or it could be two weeks. If you're able, spend a little time each day out in the run (or just outside their coop if you free range) sitting, and bring treats. Meal worms, raisins, grapes, sunflower seeds...lure/bribe them out...

Thank you so much. I did give them some watermelon today, and they came out....only to see the dog in the yard and ran back inside. I think it'll be a slow process.
