Last Saturday was my first dog related loss. My turkeys figured out how to get out of their run. When I went out to round them up I noticed that one had injuries, he is fine, just some lacerations. I noticed one of my 6 week old poults were missing. DH found it later that day while he was mowing, it wasn't pretty.

This morning We were woke by the sound of a chicken running under our bedroom window. DH jumped up to see what was going on and saw a DOG chasing my only roo. He is the best roo I have ever had, gentle, good to the girls, quiet. By the time we got out of the house they had crossed the street and disappeared. I went out and did a head count, everyone was there, until I got to the duckling/ Gosling enclosure. The dog had managed to kill one THROUGH the chicken wire?!? Dan (our roo) must have climbed the fence to stop the dog,(yes, I have watched him climb the 5 foot fence before) becoming a target himself.

I had to get the kids off to school so we went back to the house thinking the worst had happened. DH dropped me off at work and just called me from home, Dan (our roo) was trying to get back in to the girls!!!

Even though we lost one, we are still happy to have our best roo in the world.

Ditto what David said.

I'm so sorry

Having a very much loved roo myself, one I would be devastated to lose in such a horrific way, I'm so glad you didn't lose yours. But am terribly sorry for the poor birds that did get injured or die. I hope you know or can find the dog's people and do everything possible to convey why this is completely unacceptable.

Now that I have seen it I know this dog has no people, it is a mangy thing I have seen roaming far and wide before. Things can easily be solved in the morning when it meets DH and his .22.

Good for you! Taking an active role is your best choice.

I'm assuming you are referring to a .22 rimfire. If that is all you have, then use it. Mongrel dogs are tougher than you may think, however. An inhumane death resulting from a too-small caliber shot, is still a hard way to go.

If he has something a little bigger, like a .22 centerfire or on up into the medium centerfire class, using that instead is well considered advice.

There is one .22 rimfire round that is marginally suitable for this sort of use. It's called the "Quik-Shok" (...where do they get these names, anyway? That name is sure to stir anti-gunners.) and it's made by CCI/Speer.
CCI ammo is showing out of stock nearly everywhere I look, so it may be hard to obtain. But if you can find some, it is said to humanely take coyotes out to 50 yards.
