Dogs (Rant//WWYD)

We have caught the dogs before, last year. Kept one for four days to see if she would pick it up, no go. We returned it with a very firm warning. The next time we gave it to another neighbor who also has issues with these dogs and he dropped it off at a shelter 20 miles away. Though she can't be bothered to collar them, apparently at least one is chipped. Had the audacity to complain to us about having to go get it.
If she didn't come looking for her dogs after the first day, then she clearly doesn't even really want them. Catch them and rehome them.

Oh, this is sadly familiar. I have dog/chicken stories that would take the rest of tonight to recount. The neighbor has been fined multiple times, the dogs were evicted from the town.... They are back again and running loose.

The laws in most states (including mine) are very clear on nuisance dogs and livestock. If your local PD won't deal with the issue, you can sue the town for damages. (Not worth it to me, but it is an option.)

As far as proof: I would invest in a trail-cam and set it up aimed at your coop (or wherever the attacks are occuring.) You will have your proof shortly. And you may be amazed, entertained, and horrified at who/what else is visiting your coops! I dont know what state you are in, but the laws likely protect you from them "roaming", being on your property, running loose, and definitely for harassing livestock.

Good luck. You have my sincere sympathy.

Tricorn,

With time your Great Pyrenees will likely kill visiting dogs if they persist, assuming the GP's are any good. Since no fencing in place, if not neighbors dogs, then others would eventually be by. I have similar situation to you and ultimately all losses I blame on myself. My dogs have greatly reduced losses but they must be able to interact with birds to get job done. Get your fence up and if need be confine birds during part of day until LGD's you have mature into role.

If there is no animal control, then ultimately it is up to you to become the animal control. Either keep the dogs and lock them up or get em with a bb gun!
