Domestic Abuse…..An Intervention??? UPDATE!!!

I've checked her everyday since this started and she is still hiding.
No, she doesn't have any injuries that I can see and she has all her feathers. DM said something that I had not even considered. Her first thought was "did something try to get into the coop or the run?" Wow, that's possible I guess, but wouldn't the rest of them be freaked out too? Don't know. I think AKANE is right. This is my first time with chickens. The whole thing may be upsetting to me but they are chickens and they will figure it out. If not...well we'll see. Thanks folks.

This was happening in my small flock (12 including 6 roos), and one of my low ranking roos who is special needs, as well as an EE pullet had head injuries and many neck feathers missing from aggressive chasing and pecking incidents. Some of my roos were downright nasty and I came to the decision that we would have 4 of them processed. All of that to say, that once the flock dynamics changed, the coop has been much quieter, no chasing and the injured hen, Blossom has laid her first eggs this week. She started the day after the roos left. I've called them the "rooligans".

I kept the special needs roo + one other to potentially breed. One of the hens is still hiding out in the coop alot and I will work with her a little by encouraging her out with treats and staying in the run to see if she'll come to me. I know how you feel, I was getting pretty anxious about how they would sort things out, but a little re-arrranging and things seem better. Good luck with your situation!

I agree with a previous poster, gritsar, chook mating looks harsh, but if no blood is drawn, it's normal to them.

One of the things that works sometimes is too stir things up in the coop. Move feeders, roosts, waterers or add shavings throw some greens in there. Sometimes something like that sort of resorts the whole pecking thing and can help. It is not a sure thing but it has worked for me. I have two pens side by side of different breeds but similar size. Since there is no breeding right now it really doesnt matter if they mix. I have from time to time just let the whole bunch remix with new birds and the pecking order gets resorted.

HOpe this helps

I purchased 10 pullets. The 2 EE's ended up being roos. (darn - no blue green eggs). I didn't like the snatching of cheeks and screaming from my girls. It got to the point where no one wanted to come off the roost in the morning to come out and see if I put out any treats but the head roo.

I rehomed the roos to a no kill farm since I only wanted layers in the first place.

My hen house is so peacefull now.

UPDATE
I watched them pretty close this weekend and to my suprise it's not one of the Roos. It's one of the hens. She watches every move that little girl makes. The victim in questions stays behind the feed bin and if I get her out to the run she either hide behind me or will jump up in my lap. I'm trying treats and everything I can think of. I'm pretty sure she is still eating. There is food and water in the coop and in the run. Man that girl is a...well, chicken. Hope this stops soon. No one likes a bully.
