I have 8 rirs and 3 doms, they are all about 18 weeks. Are there any certain signs of when they are getting close to laying? They are all free ranging also but have a coop with laying boxes in that they go into every night...

About a week before they start laying, they will start squatting submissively when you go to touch them. This is usually a pretty good indicator. Another sign I noticed with ours is that their comb and wattles became fuller and brighter red not long prior to laying. That first egg is SO exciting, and I can't wait for you to experience the joy and gratification that comes from it!

Thank you so much! I am definitely and very "patiently" excited about getting eggs from these girls... I watched my grandfather raise chickens and now I'm doing it on my own wanting to teach my daughter!
