Just got my chicks in the mail today, ordered from Meyer Hatchery. Ordered 25, got 27, all healthy, happy and peeping loudly. My poor labrador doesn't know what to make of all that noise out on the screen porch.

Congrats on the new babies! Something makes me a bit nervous, though, that the brooder is on the screened porch. Heard some stories about dogs and raccoons ripping open the screens to get at chicks, so please be sure they are safe there.

And for what it's worth, better to put chicks on paper towels laid on top of shavings than on newspaper. Newspaper, being slick and slippery, can lead to spraddle leg in chicks.

I have a shipment coming next week with Standard and Bantam Dominiques. I can hardly wait. Good luck with your chicks.

Well 2 1/2 weeks in and the chicks are all still alive and happy. And GROWING! Dang, they've nearly quadrupled in size already! Can already tell hens from roos by the little combs! By six weeks old there's going to have to be a chicken dinner or they're going to eat up my paycheck on the feed bill.

Just finished putting the shingles on the roof of the coop I built for them, tomorrow they transfer to their new, permanent home. Still gotta do the fence on the run, but be a few weeks before I let them out in that.

Neat little chickens, really glad I chose them.
