Those are on my wish list-prob Dominiques. They are pictured in lots of early American paintings-or Delawares are!

I have some light Brahmas, they have a color pattern similar to the Delawares, i.e., white body, darker head and tail. Any pure white birds I've had were the first victims whenever a predator problem came up, but the light Brahmas haven't really been bothered, much to my surprise. I would've thought the white bodies would stand out as a target, but apparently, with the head and tail shape harder to see, they don't. At least where I am, I guess it would depend on what predators you have in your area.

I'm looking to acquire some Delawares soon, they sound like wonderful birds.

Hi,

I've been breeding Delawares for a few years now. They are an excellent, old-fashioned, dual-purpose American breed. They're friendly, calm and they lay a nice big pinkish- brown egg. It's true that their coloring makes them highly visible, but my birds free range, and I have not lost one to a predator yet; however, hawks are not too too common around here because I live in farm country, and there's some illegal hawk poaching by my neighbors (not me). My Border Collie keeps the other predators at bay pretty well. And the roos are very vigilant and good at warning the flock. A flock of young Delawares spread out over a green lawn is a pretty sight

? on Dom's. Every picture of them I see, the rooster tails look like a real weak spot. Like they are in molt. just me? Don't see the problem on the hens.
