Welcome to our Fowl Penitentiary. With Cell Block F, and The Yard, with inmates 1-20. (That comes from our baby chickens and our youngest son calling them murder scenes when they would sleep lol)

Don't give up on that bigger or better coop design you have in mind. Work with what you have to begin with and grow from there.

We had built a coop for 8-10 birds and had a pen and partial run before we even got chicks. For which we got 14 straight run Black Australorp and no more straight run unless we need to butcher lol 8 out of 14 were roos.

Hubby found pullets of a breed he wanted, so we added more, and then twice more. For a total of 20 soon to be pullets. But before all this we planned and saved and planned for a bigger coop and run. We had some glitches along the way, but all in all we got it done! (Except they do need more run and we have that planned out and are saving for it now)

Before and now photos. I'm sure there are things still needing to be done(aka the roof panels- but we haven't had rain in 2 weeks and not expecting any for a few more- yay drought season) we have plans for shutters for the vents to partially cover for rain and snow.

Also the lamp is a ceramic heat emitter, not a bulb, when we moved the second batch of babies outside for a coop brooder. We have reptiles and used one of their extras.

The flock seems to enjoy the under the coop dirt. Have to pick up nest box from my dad's house and get them set up, our oldest ones are almost 14 weeks, so getting close!

It's not perfect but it works, chickens are save, happy and thriving.

And we can technically get in and clean the coop and our rake reaches- already tested it before just to make sure lol

Yet another fine example of chicken math! Chuckled that your son referred to sleeping birds as "murder" victims.

Best wishes with getting everything finished up -- although when chicken math is in play, are we EVER really finished? :)
Lol. Thanks and yeah I don't think we'll ever be truly finished. As my hubby technically said we have enough coop bar space for 32, I said no lol
