We have two very broody hens. They've been broody for weeks with no eggs to sit on. So we broke down and bought some black copper maran eggs off of a seller on BYC. Ordered 12 eggs. 15 beautiful intact eggs arrived.

Put them in the nest the two broody hens have been using. They stopped being broody. Hopped out and wouldn't go back to the nest. FML! The eggs were so dark and different than their own eggs. They normally lay light cream eggs (they are mixed breed chickens).

We thought the eggs were good enough, but the hens begged to differ.

After a day, we finally figured how to get them to sit on the eggs. We grabbed two eggs the same color as the eggs they would have laid from another chicken and put them in with the black copper maran eggs. Both immediately hopped on to them and are now turning all the eggs.

We have some pretty discriminatory chickens. But now we have 2 hens sitting on 12 black copper maran eggs and 2 mixed breed eggs. Start the 21 day timer!

Awesome!

Keep us updated.
