We are just beginning to consider backyard chicken keeping and are interested in Australorps and Dorkings.
We live in Boise Idaho. Any suggestions to beginners would be appreciated.

Do as much research as you can before you buy your chickens, then buy the best chickens you can find. I recommend you buy from a breeder in your area if you can. The hatchery versions of these breeds are pretty bad. You are going to fall in love with whichever breed you select.

Make sure you have everything set up before you bring the chicks home. Since you are still in the considering stage, read everything you can. Check your library, you may not have to buy many books. I do recommend you buy the Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens. Since you are interested in the larger breeds, you will need a little more space in the coop and pen than you would for smaller breeds.

Hope this helps.

Did you end up getting Dorkings?
We picked up some recently (well, thats what they told us at least). They're really good around the house and came reccomended for pets, meat, eggs, anything. I'd have to say I agree, but dont think they'll be meat, family loves them too much.
