Hi all!
This is the story of barred rock hen,.next to the highest in pecking order of six hens. She's decided to pick on Rosa the red new Hampshire. They are the same age and have been togeather since hatching. Anyways, I noticed Rosa charging around the run through the crowd like she's scared and nothing's there. This is when Dotty takes into attack mode and pulls Rosa's feathers , sometimes causing the other four gals to join in on the attack!:barnieso, I separated Dotty yesterday from the rest. This morning I let her back in and she seems fine so far BUT, Rosa is acting like she's scared to pieces! High heading and steering clear of everyone else. I gave her another check making sure nothing is injured , she's ok. Just paranoid maybe? We will wait and see what the day ahead brings. Sorry if I'm rambling , should probably wait until I'm more awake to post things ! but Too late! IMG_20180814_141842007.jpg
Hi! Im Rosa! And I'm scared to bits and pieces!

Rosa doesn't lay as often as Dotty .
Dotty lays everyday where as Rosa may lay twice , three times I a week. I forgot to mention they atevall three years old.
Thank you for the reply
Something in the dynamics of the flock has changed. Any new Birds or loses?. Pecking order is different or the one is ill?

I just did double check everything on Rosa's health, she seems as Norm as far as I can tell. Maybe she could be starting to molt yes. Not a huge feather loss and I'm not so sure if the feather loss isn't from her struggle avoiding the others. You are right about the Dynamics changing . I just don't understand why pick on the hen that's on the bottom of pecking order.

She might be trying to move up in the order?

You may have something there. I watched them roost last night and Rosa did choose a different place than her usual. She was the first to go inside as usual but she went to the opposite end , I thought she was being shunned , after the gang settled she was alone. I'll watch tonight and let Dotty stay in the run today.
Thanks for your suggestions chickens really! I'll post any changes as they happen.

Yes, your welcome and don't interfere because we don't speak Chicken...:frow

How big is their coop and run? Bored confined birds will occupy their time in other ways like picking on each other.

Another option is they are craving protein. What are you feeding? If they have begun to molt they will need more protein.
