So I'm wondering just how "rare" double yolks are? A quick Google search tells me 1 in 1,000 eggs! Well, if thats the case we have a record laying lady amongst our flock. Our girls started laying about a month ago and we've had 8 double yolks so far! We only have 9 chickens, so I was wondering if there are specific breeds who tend to lay them more often? We can't pinpoint who it is because when we go to pick up eggs a few girls are hanging out in the coop or the nesting boxes, but my assumption is one of our Sapphire Gems.

Double yolks are common in pullets just starting to lay. Once their reproductive system fully matures it's rare to see a double yolker. I got my first one from a hen this year.

My first Flock (5 Golden Comets) laid dozens of double yolks their first year.
My second Flock (7 Barred Rocks) laid maybe a half dozen.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but the Comets were early spring chicks, and the Rocks were mid-summer chicks.

I think it's breed/type. Comets are a high production hybrid. GC
