Old post I know, but I'm dealing with my first water belly so learning it all. There's no particular correct spot: about one inch to the right and at least one inch to the south of her vent (so about 1.5" south/east from her vent is the most north spot to get her). This is where I just performed it on my chook.Do you happen to remember where you inserted the needle? I am having a hard time finding the correct spot.
Some people suggest further south: lay her on a table with her bottom overhanging the edge, and find a spot quite low down, about one inch to the right of her vent still. I'll be trying this next time.
Someone suggested wetting the surrounding feathers, which definitely makes it easier to keep the area clear / less risk of contaminating the needle on the way to her skin.
