I posted in emergencies as well, but there isn't anyone on there right now...

Went to put my Rouen drake in bed with his girls and he had blood all over his bill! my son wiped his nose and a clot seemed to fall off. We managed to grab him and wipe his bill off with some hydrogen peroxide. There is no sign of trauma to his bill, but both nares are red inside. He isn't bleeding any more. I called the vet on call and she said he might have shoved something up his nose or perhaps a respiratory infection? She said she could have the emergency vet meet me at the hospital tonight or bring him in in the morning. He is acting totally normal otherwise. Doesn't seem sick or lethargic. No sign of trauma anywhere else on his body.

Should I wait or just keep checking on him through the night....or go for the emergency vet....Anyone had experience with this?

Thanks for any help!

He is 2 years old....

No experience, but hoping he'll be ok.

Whether to go the emergency/wait til morning route is your own judgement call.

I suppose that depends on your level of attachment to the duck and the depth of your pocketbook.

Personally, I would wait till the morning, then reassess, but my ducks are viewed as favored farm animals, rather than personal pets.

He seemed fine this AM, but took him into the vet anyway. She guessed he had probably got something up one of his nares, which seems to have gotten out, leaving my big sweetie with a bloody nose.

What we ALSO found out though, that his clotting function was delayed. Took almost 5 minutes for his blood to clot. This is likely the result of some sort of toxicity. We can't figure out what he might have gotten into. He is in an enclosure and eats what all the other ducks and chickens eat....anyway, she did blood tests and there is no liver damage, no kidney damage, no tachycardia, and his lungs are clear. Just waiting to get white blood cell results back to make sure he is not harboring some sort of virus.

In the meantime, assuming it was something toxic, he is on Vitamin K injections for a month to help the clotting while whatever it is clears his system. I can't wait to get a full grown 8lb Rouen drake to still to give him a shot in the breast 2x a day.....ACK! We didn't raise him from a duckling, so he is not very happy with being picked up, let alone being partially on his back, and I now have the scratches to prove it!

On the bright side, when we brought him back home, his girls went nuts seeing him...what a ruckus! His special lady, Soap, another Rouen, was especially happy!

Thanks for your replies - they are very much appreciated.

PS Victor and Soap are the couple in my picture...

Sweet pic. I'm hoping all tests will turn out good. and when treating wrap him in a towel it really helps to keep the skin on our hands an arms on our hands an arms. lol sounds like he is much loved.

From a while ago....Victor totally healthy except for a slow clotting ratio. Vet figured he got into something toxic...rat poison???? Never use it. She gave us a month's worth of shots of Vitamin K to support his clotting while whatever he ingested got out of his system. Well, after 4 days of trying to catch, hold and inject a needle into his breast...it took 3 of us....and getting all the other birds upset, we gave up. He's still fine, happy healthy and normal. Hopefully whatever was the problem has passed....anyone in need of 3 weeks with of Vitamin K injections???? Too bad is wasn't Vitamin B-12....
