Hello! I am Autumn (she/her). I have wanted chickens for years and it is looking as though 2021 will be the year. We are applying for our permit and have coop plans/budget planned out.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Brand new, but have been reading about it for years and took the chicken class at Eggplant Urban Supply when we bought our hours almost a decade ago. With work, and grad school, and kids, the timing was never right but now we think it is time.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Zero. Hoping to get 4-6 chicks next spring.
(3) What breeds do you have? TBD! Looking at Silver-Laced Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock, Midnight Majesty Marans, and Ameraucana/Easter Egger.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Right now, day dreaming and planning.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Gardening/plant-parenting, painting/drawing, reading/writing, yoga. And video games (yes really).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Two amazing children, Elton (they/them), and Oliver (he/him). Elton is studying art in Chicago, and Oli is still in high school. Husband Joe is a teacher and also works at a local bakery. I work at a local art and design college. We have three cats, three rats, and two dogs. We have been a car free household for nearly 14 years and are trying to find as many ways as possible to be self-sufficient.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Eggplant!
