So I bought an enclosure from a guy for my quail. He including some drinking cups for free. He was going to use them for the quail pen and had no other use. Could quail even use them? They seem rather big to me. Curious if anyone else has tried them out.
Including a google image in case anyone isn't sure what they are.

I have some that i havent gotten around to putting on anything yet but ive seen others use them safely.

Some cups are gravity flow with the yellow tab being a float valve, and some require pecking at the yellow tab to release the water. Can you tell which you have? I'd think the gravity flow would surely work for quail, not sure about the other.

Im not quite sure which one they are. The yellow tab pushes in and is controlled by a spring, so that makes me lean to the peck type.

Im looking at the different ideas for waterers. Ive decided on either horizontal nipples or cups without the peck part.
I want to have a bucket outside the run and the waterers inside, could I even do that with the nipples?

I used them for a while and the cups themselves worked fine (quail were able to peck at yellow tab enough to get water), but the system overall became dirty and was hard to clean since the cups were attached to a PVC line that was mounted to hutch. It was set up similarly to the gravity-fed watering system in Slightly Rednecked's video on YouTube. I think part of the problem is it was too large of a set up (2 gallon bucket) for my small covey and they weren't drinking enough water to keep everything flowing quickly and cleanly. The hose connecting the bucket to the PVC line with cups grew algae and clogged the cups regularly. I now use these and so far so good: https://www.amazon.com/Automatic-Re...hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583451668628951&psc=1

I use the exact same cups in my garage and they've had no issues for over a year. If you're going to use them in a place that gets sunlight, don't use a translucent container and treat the water with apple cider vinegar. I use a 6 gallon emergency water container from Walmart as my reservoir. I screw the cap on almost all the way so air can still get in, but prevents dirt from getting in. You don't want to place the bulkhead at the bottom either, because all the solids that accumulate at the bottom will get in your line.

Here's the videos FunOnABun was talking about:
The set-up:

Training quail to use them:

The videos pretty much go over everything. The only thing that I can add is the water cups need to be about 3" of the floor. They can reach them at the height and can't poop in them. It'll take some extra money and time to get the water cups set up, but it'll be worth it in the long run.
