Dropped fertile egg :(!!

I took my temp probe out of my water wiggler to get a reading on the humidity inside my homemade bator today. When I walked back in, it read 107!! The inside temp reading was where it had always been, right around 96. So, I have been moving the probe around to see if I can get the two to read the same since the entire thing is in the bator. While waiting for a reading, I decided to move my eggs around a little.....

. Even worse is that I can see blood vessels so I know that this one was at least attempting to incubate

. Now, my questions are:

1. should I trust the temp reading on the wiggler and not worry so much about it shooting up so far?

2. the liquid is still intact on the cracked egg....just a little is sort of sticking out....what are the chances it will hatch? Should I just toss it? They are on day 7....

I'm so sorry about dropping it. I don't know what to say about that egg. I would go ahead with what the temp in the water weasel says. That's what people told me and I got a pretty good hatch rate.

I had a egg crack at 14 days and I melted some crayon on it and it held for another 5 days and the chick hatched just fine. You could try it and then candle in a week to see how it goes.

Depending on how the heating works, if the water weasel is close to the heat source, it can often get warmer than the surrounding air. If the weasel is egg level among them all, I say go with it's temp too. For broken egg, see if you can't "stick" it back together with wax or I've heard of gorella glue and let it go. Watch it for infection though.

I wouldnt use gorilla glue it isnt non toxic-- and it expands as it dries. I did do the melted crayon thing on two of my eggs that where cracked when shipped. It is working great, those eggs are on Day 9 and progressing great. I just placed them in the egg carton and held a match to a crayon (yellow!) directly above the egg and let the wax drip and seal the crack. Most crayons are non toxic for kids use..... I think it would work! I dont think the dye int he crayon is a problem since they sometime dye chicks while still in the egg.....

oh-- and about temps, pay attention to where they are placed. If it is still air incubator, I would trust teh weasel, but be sure it is level with the eggs and the same distance from the heat source. On my still air, the temp at the top of the egg reads 103.5 or 104, in the water weasel reads 100.0 and the bottom/floor reads 98.

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to go ahead and leave my temp where it is and rely on the wiggler temp....

As for my cracked egg....since some of the veins are sort of sticking out, should I remove a little of the egg so they won't be wedged between the crack? Since it is sort of exposed, would it hurt it putting hot wax on it? And, how do I know if it gets an infection?

Tiffanyh, my temps are similar to yours.....103/104, 100, and 96-98. I'm going to trust my wiggler and hope that it is okay.

Oh, if it gets an infection, it will die and start to stink. Safest thing would be to just remove it, especially if veins can be seen. As soon as you put hot wax on veins, it will kill the tissue and the chick might not survive. At day 8 though, your chick has alot of ways to go with a crack in the shell. He will also dry out much quicker. It's your call really.
