Droppings boards in the Winter

Great ideas - I'm going to redo my droppings board (their butts are overshooting mine on one side) so I'm making it wider and probably going to just use peel and stick vinyl tiles. Here's hoping it doesn't stick too bad, and I've got the material left over from doing the mud room.

I use the deep litter method and some days it is too cold and snowy for the girls to go outside; their choice as the pop door is open. So they are spending increasing amounts of time in the litter.
I put in a droppings shelf and it has been amazing to see how much they produce in 24 hours. They do not walk on the shelf so if the poo freezes and builds up until the next thaw it is ok with me because all that daily volume isn't in the litter and they aren't in the board poo. It just looks disgusting. We have had loads of nights in the upper teens but the poo hasn't frozen yet. I think it is a good system.

Chance, what a GREAT idea !! That's why I LOVE THIS BOARD!!! I have learned so much from all yall!! When I finally am able to start my coop I'm goin to remember everyones cool ideas!!
Also....I was wonderin... do the roosts have to be right on top of the nests? I have noticed some with the nests under them and some not.

I keep a thin layer of shavings (just dirty ones scooped off the floor of the coop) on the droppings board. That way, hardly any of the poo freezes onto the board and it's just about as easy to scrape off every morning as it is in nonfreezing weather.

I agree... I've gotten SO many great ideas from this board!

I happen to have my roost directly over the nesting boxes because I have a small coop... it's only 4' x 8'. The nesting boxes are elevated about 18" from the coop floor, which still allows the girls to walk under the nests, so I haven't lost any floorspace. When I grow up I want a "real" coop, not a shed that I've converted
