Drowning on Dry Land

I very dimly remember my parents getting turkey chicks when I was very little, and that the poor little guys died during their first rain. Apparently, they looked up at the rain and drowned...?
Is this... a common thing??? I think about it often, and it just sort of has always puzzled me.

That is just a myth. Young poults will get chilled and die if not kept out of the rain and provided with extra heat.
