Drowning problem

Have lost a rooster and a hen to drowning in the horse trough. Apparnetly they are perching on the side of the Rubbermaid trough and falling in for some reason. THey are healthy and have water of their own. The horses need access tot he water and the chickens freerange all day. Was thinkinf of adding some kind of "ladder" so if they fall in they can climb out. Thoughts?

i had the same problem last year, so made a 'ladder' either end of the trough with rocks, so chickens could clamber out if they fell in, but the horses could still drink

i have rocks to the brim in all of my water containers so the chickens dont try to commit suicide.
