Obviously, with cautions in place re: handling, container, etc. BUT,
Has anyone used dry ice to keep coops cool during excessive heat? What chicken-safe container did you use? What about off-gassing, if any? What about safe placement within coop? Would dry ice be as cool as just a frozen jug of water?

Just a thought, but I'd like some feedback from those with personal experience. Feel free to say if this is a dumb idea!

No personal experience here. However, Dry Ice sublimates into Carbon Dioxide gas, which is heavy and will sink. Too much carbon dioxide gas means you or your birds are not getting enough oxygen. Many warnings around having a supply of fresh air around dry ice. In addition, you can get burned from dry ice. Since Dry Ice is a hazardous item, it is more costly to store and distribute, so it would be an expensive and not very safe option for cooling your birds. Overall, there are better options.

Thanks for all replies. I suspected dry ice would not be a good choice for cooling, but wanted to check with BYC for some feedback first.

I'll continue to reuse my plastic jugs/bottles for freezing water.
