My Runner just went stiff. Her heart is racing but I don’t know if it’s cuz she can’t move? Panicked?I put her in her in the pond and she went to the corner and seems to want to nap. I looked up lame duck and found everything from botulism to she’ll be fine. Do I just separate her, give her some niacin and wait?! My other 8 ducks seem just fine.

How's your duck today? Almost sounds like a seizure.
She’s sad. Her legs move but she can’t stand. She has no interest in food and I know that’s normal so I’m not worried, yet. She drinks a little bit and I gave her some niacin last night. I put her right in the pond this morning and she’s content there. If it was a seizure, what do I do?! I’ve nursed ducks before and I have a vet. How long do you think I should wait this out? (Thank you SO MUCH for asking! None of my birds over the years have ever done the same thing twice so when something like this happens the learning do me is stressful.)

Is it only her legs? Botulinum generally affect the neck as well. Can she lift it? Is it possible she received a head injury? Is she old enough to be laying? I might contact your vet for an opinion if you have that option. If it's a vitamin deficiency than hopefully she improves with daily doses.

She can lift her head and in the pond you’d never know something was wrong. When I pick her up her legs stay straight behind her and she’s tense. But in the pond they move. I just went out there and she came up to me and wagged her tail. I offered her food and she tried but then her bill stays open like she doesn’t have control of it. I’ve seen that before after one of the boys got to her sister this past winter. She eventually starved to death cuz her neck was put out. I took her to the chiropractor. It’s slightly possible one of the boys got to her; I keep them separated cuz of the damage they’ve done to others, but one flew over the fence on Sunday. But she appeared absolutely fine til yesterday afternoon when I turned around and she was stuck in a puddle. I also have cbd oil with frankincense for my “broken” girls. Should I give her some and see how she does, maybe give her til tomorrow? Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid I'm no expert on these things. If a neck injury from a drake she should eventually heal. Losing control of muscles makes me think maybe botulinum. If it's a mild case she could be okay. Hopefully someone else recognizes the symptoms and can help.

Me too. Can I treat botulinum without the vet? I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and see how she is in the morning. I’ll know then if I should call the vet. I do have a Black Swedish that got mysteriously ill, I nursed her the only way I knew how and prayed and after about a week she recovered. I don’t take that for granted and now I call her my miracle muck duck. If only they’d use their words! Thank you.

I personally don't treat things beyond simple wounds. In my experiences they will either get better or they don't. I haven't had much luck fixing health conditions long term. I personally would continue what you are doing and see how it goes. Sometimes they get better and sometimes they don't. Not sure what a vet would do beyond antibiotics or vitamins. Just do your best. That's all any of us can do when dealing with unknown things.

No doubt. I’ve lost birds after only a year and I’ve had others for 14. My vet said if there was such a thing as reincarnation she’d come back as a chicken at my house. When I started keeping poultry there was only BYC at my local county fair and now I can ask questions on the internet. I am grateful and it warms my heart there’s so many others like me. Thank you very much for all your time.

I don’t know who will see this but as of yesterday, my duck is almost brand new. I’d say she’s about 85%. Looking through information and other’s posts on BYC and observing her, I believe she may have had a stroke. She was one of my loudest and now she’s the quietest and she follows instead of leads but I’m okay with that as long as I have her. She’s back to being a duck, and her “don’t touch me!” self. I believe it to be the power of prayer. What else could it be?!
