We're building our coop, and thinking through potential pitfalls. We plan to put a window in each side with a screen and hardware cloth the inside. I also am going to get floor vent heat registers and put them along the top for ventilation. Their coop will have late afternoon shade, and we plan to coop them up at night.

My question/worry is their comfort at night. We live in NC, and in the dead of summmer, it can stay in the 80s at night. I'm not sure what Temps would be like at night in a closed coop, even with vents and windows. I don't want to overheat them! Any warmer weather people have experience or input on this? Thanks!

I'm in TX and because of the heat I decided to do a 3 sided coop. The Southeast side is open and just hardware cloth. The top also has a 2 inch gap between the roof and the sides. It's covered with hardware cloth as well. Summer nighttime temps are in the 80's with some days not dropping below the 90's. It can get pretty steamy at times. Since winters tend to be mild I just put a board over part of the open side when it drops into the 30's and colder.

I am in NC also. I have similar set up as Needlessjunk has said, and do the same during colder weather. Here's a pic, both sides of the front open for cleaning purposes. The ducks love it bc it's so open. It's inside a covered fenced in run.

I really like your coop! Simple and effective :)

Thanks! It was something I had already in the run for when I had chickens (was their rain shelter) so when I got more ducks I just added to the front and turned it into a house. They hated their first house that had a small ramp and not so open. They hang out in their during the day too.
