We had something fall on one of our ducks last night. At first he just seemed shook up and dazed. We brought him in to be by him self to rest & today he's having a problem with his balance. Is this something that will pass or do we need to get him to the vet? Were just worried the vet will rush judgement to put him down but we also want to make sure he's not suffering. Please help any advice is appreciated

How heavy was the object that fell on him and is there an open wound. did it pin him or just hit him on the head. He may need a few days to recover then again he could have a brain injury hard for those of us not able to see him which it maybe. I'd go with my gut if you don't see any improvement soon and he isn't eating or drinking then i'd take him to the vet, you will be the one to make the decision on whether to put him down or not. The vet can't do that with out your okay.

I would say 15-20lbs. We didn't see where it hit him but he has a small crack in beak with no separation. There are no open wounds. Also object just hit him it didn't pin him. He has been drinking no real eating but nibble a little bit of food.

When you look at his eyes do they look normal compared to the other ducks? I think you can tell alot about a head injury by the eyes. That's alot of weight to fall onto a duck. How does he seem this morning? You can put some ACV into his drinking water to help with the cracked bill. It works ads an antibacterial and also is a good tonic. 1-2 Tab to 1 gal of water. I hope your seeing improvement today.

He seems alert and eyes look normal. His spirits seem better but still has a walking issue he seems to be fine standing in 1 spot but soon as he walks he begin to loose balance. We let him float in pool legs were kicking normally. Could his back or neck or something else be broke that would cause the walking issues? He will lift his head like normal at times but but seems to get tired quickly.

He could dif have a neck or back injury and that will take time to heal and hopefully it will. I'd make sure he gets plenty of rest but has pool therapy to keep his muscles strong. If you think a vet could help then by all means take him, they will most likely want to do xrays. also some poultry vitamins in his water. Thanks for update.

We have an update we took him to vet after X-rays they found he has a displaced fractured vertebrae. If it heals ok he could be fine. Have to wait and see. He's drinking fine but not eating you can tell he's hungry but having trouble eating. While at vet they tube fed him.

What's keeping him from eating do you think pain? Thanks for update sure hope he heals up fine. You could try making him some fermented feed, it's moist and maybe easier to eat. take a cup of feed put 1-2 tab of ACV and hot water mixed together pour over the feed let it sit long enough for the water to be absorbed even over night the longer the better as far as fermenting but your just trying to get him to eat, you can even try it soupy and see if he can eat it better that way. Try a small amount to see if he'll eat it my flock love ff.
