Duck pen

I'm thinking about putting wood bark chipping in the duck pen are they safe for ducks ?

I've heard mixed opinions, i know my ducks enjoy truffling in the mud however, would you allow an area for that or do they free range? I would also think appropriate drainage would be key to using that type of material.

They don't free range as we have a dog n he likes to nibble the ducks lol was thinking about slabs n then plastic membrane and then a good layer of bark ,their pen is waterlogged so need to sort the problem out
