I have 17 pullets 6 months old, 4 cockerels 5 months old, and 2 ducks 2 years old all living together.
At this point in time the cockerels are all pretty nice to eachother and the pullets. They don't hurt them when mating. It's all over pretty quickly, the pullet shakes herself and off she goes.
All the reading I've done here about over sexed cockerels has gotten me ready for hurt girls but so far, no problems and now I am wondering if it is becase of the DUCKS. I started noticing that every once in awhile there will be a ruckus where the pullet doesn't want to be mounted (exhibited by squawking and trying to run away while the cockerel is still on her back). Next, I hear a great loud quacking as my ducks run up to the rooster and begin biting him! The cockerel runs away screeching with ducks in hot pursuit. I've seen them pull out tail feathers.
Could this be why the cockerels are for the most part pretty nice to the pullets? Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?
I should add that I got the ducks from a lady who had too many drakes and these poor ducks had been sadly used. Missing all their neck feathers and eye infections from the drakes drooling on them while mating. I wonder if this is why they go after the cockerels.

This is very interesting. I have one cockerel and three pullets, and yes, I know the ratio is not good. But my boy is either very gentle, or the girls are very quiet about it. I don't see any bare patches, or any other signs of overmating. They were all raised together, and are almost 7 months old.

So maybe you also have gentlemanly cockerels. Let's hope they stay that way, eh?

Or maybe it is because of the ducks. :)
